The World’s Wealthiest Nations in 2017: A GDP Per Capita Analysis

When assessing a nation’s wealth, economists often look beyond total economic output and focus on GDP per capitaβ€”the total economic production divided by the population. It offers a better view of the average income and living conditions of a country’s population. The global economy in 2017 brought attention to surprising leaders, with a number of small countries surpassing larger and more traditional economic giants. This analysis explores the richest countries in the world according to GDP per capita, based on purchasing power parity (PPP), and examines what drives their remarkable wealth.

    GDP per capita

    Understanding GDP Per Capita

Gross Domestic Product per capita represents the total value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year, divided by its population. The PPP adjustment accounts for differences in the cost of living and inflation rates between countries, making international comparisons more meaningful. While GDP per capita is a widely used indicator of economic welfare, it’s worth noting that consumption per capita can sometimes offer a more accurate picture of consumer welfare across different nations.
The Top 10 Richest Nations in 2017

    GDP per capita

    1. Qatar – $124,930

The small Middle Eastern emirate claimed the top position as the world’s richest country in 2017. With a population of approximately 2.27 million, Qatar’s immense wealth stems primarily from its vast petroleum and natural gas reserves . Despite facing lower hydrocarbon prices that triggered revenue drops in 2017, the nation maintained its leadership position. Its GDP growth continued through the year, demonstrating remarkable economic resilience .

    2. Luxembourg – $109,190

This tiny European nation, with a population close to 600,000, secured the second position. Luxembourg’s economy benefits from a strong workforce, robust banking systems, and being home to major corporations including steel giant ArcelorMittal . Its 2016 growth exceeded the European Union’s overall growth rate, though the IMF noted that Brexit and U.S. policy changes could create market instability .

    GDP per capita

    3. Singapore – $90,530

The Southeast Asian city-state ranked third globally and first in Asia. With a population of approximately 5.6 million, Singapore’s real GDP grew by 2.7% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, driven largely by a rebound in the global electronics trade . Most of the nation’s growth came from sectors that depend heavily on international exports.

    4. Brunei – $76,740

The Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam, situated adjacent to Malaysia, ranks fourth with a population of just over 400,000. Nearly 90% of Brunei’s revenue in 2014 came from oil and gas exports . Despite GDP growth declining in 2016, the country performed better than expected and demonstrated success in adjusting to oil market downturns .

    GDP per capita
    5. Ireland – $72,630

Ireland rounded out the top five with one of the highest growth rates in Europe. Higher spending, business investment, and construction projects played important roles in driving Ireland’s economic growth during 2016. The country’s corporate-friendly tax policies have attracted numerous multinational corporations, significantly boosting its economic output .

    6. Norway – $70,590

With a population exceeding 5 million, this Scandinavian nation placed sixth in the rankings. While Norway was negatively affected by lower oil prices over recent years, it managed to lower its unemployment rate after its peak following the 2008-2009 economic downturn . The country’s sovereign wealth fund, built on oil revenues, provides a substantial financial cushion .

    7. Kuwait – $69,670

Kuwait stood out from many other oil-producing countries, which saw economic growth slow in 2016 as oil prices declined. The emirate, with a population of over 4 million, saw growth in non-oil sectors that is expected to continue . Kuwait’s wealth stems primarily from oil, though lower global prices impacted the kingdom .

    GDP per capita

    8. United Arab Emirates – $68,250

With a population just over 10 million, the UAE ranks eighth. The economy is propelled primarily by oil, though non-oil revenue is also rising significantly . Lower oil prices and output led to slower growth in 2016, but non-oil growth is expected to rise in 2017 .

    9. Switzerland – $61,360

The Alpine nation with a population of around 8 million secured ninth place. Switzerland’s economy was recovering after its central bank lost $52 billion in 2015, with growth reaching 1.5% in 2016 . The country has been implementing policies to boost its economic recovery .

    10. San Marino – $60,360

This microstate, surrounded by Italy and measuring merely 61 square kilometers, ranked tenth. Tourism contributes approximately 22% of its GDP, and the country has been in recovery mode with rising employment rates . Its total population is a little above 33,000 residents.

    GDP per capita

    Notable Omissions and Surprises

The United States, despite being the world’s largest economy overall, failed to make the top ten, ranking 13th with a GDP per capita of $59,500 . The UK and other major European economies ranked significantly lower .Russia ranked first among the BRICS nations with a GDP per capita of $27,900. China came next at $16,620, followed by Brazil at $15,500 and South Africa at $13,400. India ranked lowest at $7,170, though it improved its position to 126th globally .

    Conclusion

The 2017 GDP per capita rankings reveal that small nations with strategic economic advantagesβ€”particularly oil and gas reserves, financial services, or favorable business environmentsβ€”dominate the list. These countries demonstrate that population size and total economic output don’t necessarily correlate with individual prosperity. The dominance of hydrocarbon-rich nations in the rankings highlights the continued significance of natural resources in global wealth distribution.
